ADVENT CONSPIRACY

For the last three years, Hood River Alliance Church has partnered with thousands around the world who have become co-conspirators in a plot to reclaim the value and life-changing nature of Christmas. 'We are conspiring against what Christmas has become,' said Pastor Steve Grace, 'against the materialism and commercialism our society has made Christmas into.' After all, God's original idea in sending His Son to earth in human form was indeed to change the worldto bring life to that which was dead. But somehow the miracle has been eclipsed by stress, shopping lists, traffic jams and looming debt. Advent Conspiracy began in 2006 with three pastors who simply wanted to challenge people to make Christmas personal again, revolutionary even. They asked folks to consider doing four things:

1) Worship Jesus fully.

2) Consider spending less on gifts that are bought out of obligation.

3) Give more relational gifts.

4) Use a little of the money you didn't spend to Love All by helping those in need.

The idea exploded into a grassroots movement that has continued to spread in influence and scope each year. This season, thousands of churches and individuals are rethinking the way they 'do Christmas' in order to be a part of something life-changing and personal. They are entering the story to do something unforgettable. And we are among them. As a church, we have identified three areas where we want to give gifts that will mean something :

Living Water International ~ Drilling and repairing fresh water wells in under-resourced countries where people are dying from the lack of clean water.

Remember Nhu ~ Working to eliminate the exploitation of children in the sex trade industry, removing them from high-risk situations and providing a safe, nurturing home, as well as education and skill training.

Local Ministries of Hood River ~ It is important to us to support local ministries that help meet the needs of our neighbors -- places like FISH Food Bank, The Next Door, St. Francis House and others.
